All decked out and nowhere to go

While the boat show doesn’t actually open until tomorrow Dave and I took the opportunity to stroll the boardwalk at the Gravenhurst Wharf this evening.  We were able to get really close to the few stunning boats that were already moored at the docks.  It was an absolutely perfect evening to be down by the waterfront.  There was a slight breeze blowing off the humidity of the day, many boats were coming and going and there were a great many people taking in the sights like us.  Many of those down there were attending the reception in the big tent on the green being held to celebrate the living members of the Canadian Boating Federation Hall of Fame

Every year on this weekend Gravenhurst Bay and the wharf is crowded with thousands of boating enthusiasts eager to get a peak at some of the over 100 boats on display.  This year’s display on the docks is being dubbed as The Greatest Race Boat Show in Canadian History and is, as always, hosted by the Antique and Classic Boat Society of Toronto.  More than 150 of these impressive vehicles will make up the fleet that is amounting to one of the largest collections of race boats ever displayed in North America and is celebrating the past 100 years of racing history.

On several occasions since the ice left Gravenhurst Bay this spring the wharf has been the scene of a great deal of media attention as the poster boat for this year’s boat show, the recently restored Miss Canada IV, was launched and tested on the very water she first floated on in the 1940′s when she was built by Greavette Boat Works.  In 1950 this 32 foot amazing racer, guided by legendary driver Harold Wilson, broke world speed records when she was clocked exceeding 200 mph.

Before you get confused, this photo is not of the legendary Miss Canada IV.  And its not the Miss Canada III either, which is also owned by Canadian businessman Bobby Genovese.  This is just one of the beauties, an American as you can see by the stern flag, that floated alongside the docks on this quiet Friday evening in July.

As the gorgeous evening progressed it appeared likely that all those around the dock were going to be able to witness yet another stunning sunset.  And while it wasn’t quite as amazing as the sunset we photographed and posted on Facebook about a month ago, it was still a sight to behold and be grateful for.  Check it out on FB at www.facebook.com/130sixth.
